IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK
March 13, 2020: Meals on Wheels Chicago is doing everything we can to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. These measures include cancelling our upcoming fundraising event Chicago on Tap. We have also suspended all volunteer activities and programs for seniors until further notice. This specifically impacts our Love Notes Program and Senior Center volunteer opportunities. We hope to resume these activities as soon as health officials advise the public it is safe to do so.
REST ASSURED, ALL MEAL SERVICE TO OUR CLIENTS WILL CONTINUE. Delivery drivers will maintain their regular delivery schedules, and boxed meal pick up is still available at the area Senior Centers. Both meal providers adhere to the strictest health and safety guidelines, and will continue to provide meals in a manner that is safe for the vulnerable senior population. In the case of further restrictions on movement or delivery, all MOWC clients have received Emergency Meals (aka shelf-stable meals) that will supplement regular meal delivery. We are glad to have delivered over 61,000 Emergency Meals this year, providing each client with 5 days of meals. This safety net provides much needed security to our clients in this time of fear and anxiety, and we are grateful for the generous bequest from Dr. M. Cherif Bassiouni that made this investment possible.
THE NEED HAS NOT GONE AWAY. With your help, our clients will not see a change in service going forward. Program funding relies heavily on revenue from fundraising events and individual donations, so the decision to cancel Chicago on Tap and our volunteer programs was not taken lightly. Canceling this event means we must rely more heavily on the generosity of individual donors.
Donations to our cause, no matter the size, have a direct impact on our ability to serve those in need, and the power of generosity has never been more important. If you were going to attend Chicago on Tap, please consider donating the ticket price of $75 today. We appreciate anything you may be able to contribute at this time. All donations are fully tax-deductible, and if everyone gives a little our clients can come through this unique situation unscathed and heartily fed.
With sincere gratitude for your support,
